Fearless Face Stencil Design System Release 2

Well, for sure I have fallen off the blog planet.  Can't explain why other than just life is so busy.  Looking back to January, Barbara Donahay (, her husband Dave, Virginia England and myself exhibited at the CHA 2017 show!  This was a ton of work but what a rewarding experience!

Up until then, I had been working hard on the second release of the Fearless Face Stencil Design System which proved to be a big hit at the show.  We were demonstrating the products for 3 days at the show and saw a bunch of familiar faces as well as met tons of new and inspiring people!  That is always the best part of these types of shows.

Here are work-in-process torsos that I created with the Fearless Face stencils which now includes masks, wings, and shoulders, arms and hands.  Trust me, you can't design a beautiful face faster and easier than with these stencils!  If you haven't seen them yet, check out the designs HERE at There are 41 stencils that include all designs for all 3 face sizes.  Also, check out Barbara's latest video talking all about them, below:

Along with the stencils, I've created instructional PDFs that explain how to go from a stencil sketch to your final beautiful drawing.  See the links here to the Joggles site where they currently sit.  I will be posting them here on my blog for easy access as well.

I've got a special project that I am working on for the next couple of weeks which will take most of my time and then I will be back to making videos to demonstrate even more fun that you can have with the Fearless Face Stencil Design System!!!

NEW RELEASE! Fearless Face Stencil System - The easiest way to create beautiful faces!

Now at

Check out my new face designing stencils!  This is a fantastic set of stencils!!!  I have made it soooo easy for you to create beautiful faces to incorporate into your artwork!  All stencils are 6" x 9" making them very affordable as always is!  Check out all the options:

2 Face Shapes
3 Face Sizes
6 Face Styles
3 Hairstyles
Braids and Ponytails
5 Hats
2 Crowns
2 Headbands
and 3 styles of Eyeglasses

I have always wanted to create faces so I finally took the leap and developed a set of stencils that would allow me to create cute faces quickly and easily and in 3 different sizes.  The faces range in size from Large - 4 ½” x 3”, Medium - 3 ½” x 2 ½” and Small - 2 ½” x 1 ¾”.  I pushed beyond my initial design ideas to add hats, hair and even glasses!  I’m super excited to introduce these great easy-to-use stencils to create beautiful faces for your art projects!

These designs are somewhat graphic and semi-realistic in nature, but they can easily be transformed into more realistic features depending on the type of media you are using to create them.  I really like this versatility as it opens up so many more opportunities for the look and feel that you can create in the face designs.  Sometimes I want to create a very graphic look by stenciling black paint for the eyes, nose and lips and other times I enjoy creating with just my pencils for a sketched look.

One of the coolest results of creating endless face designs with these stencils is the character design story that you can develop along with your drawing!  Every time I create a new face, the character starts to develop.  I start thinking about who this girl (or boy) is or who she wants to be, what her interests, dreams and goals are, and what her personality is like.  All of a sudden, this incredible character comes to life!

Check them out at today!

I guarantee you will have as much fun as I do creating with these stencils!!!

Flora & Fonds New Stencils and Masks!

Wow!  I guess I have been on an extended vacation and I didn't even know it!  I wouldn't be surprised if you thought I abandoned you.  Nope!  I'm here and have been really busy working away and I even have NEWS!

My new collection of Flora & Fronds, 6" x 9" stencils and masks are available on  I totally missed a post on this because I was already working on MORE NEW STENCILS when they came out.  So believe it or not, I'm now just exploring these stencils and having a blast with them.  I actually found a new technique that I am loving shown in these two images.

I have taken my Derwent Inktense blocks and scribbled messy inside the stencil areas.  Then I dip my finger in water and dab it over those spaces to wet the ink.  The trick to this technique is to not add too much water and to re-wet your finger every few dabs.  Rather than trying intentionally to miss some spots and distress the look of the applied watercolor, you are guaranteed to get that look by using this technique!  (I'm seeing a new fabric design developing!)

This technique probably works fine with water-soluble crayons as well but I have not yet tried that.  To finish the look, I messy sketched over the stencil marks using a black permanent fine point marker.

Believe it or not, there are more stencils coming out this Wednesday, November 9th at  You are going to be really SURPRISED by this collection.  I can't give any hints but it's only 2 days away so you will have to wait.  I do promise to post all the information on Wednesday so you can see all the awesome artwork I have already created with them!

So again, I am sorry for being away for so long.  I'm still here.  I've still got tons of ideas and next up will be finishing my Rotational Design E-book!  I can't wait!!!

Check back Wednesday for the New Collection!!!

Studio Sunday - New Stencils Coming!

Wow, I can't believe it has been a month almost since I posted last.  My studio is currently packed up again and stored in the corner of my room due to the master bathroom renovation going on, which is in my bedroom.  I've got to hang in for a few weeks until things return to normal, but I managed to stay busy with watercolor and drawing this weekend.  My Rotational Designs are covered right now and I'm diligently working on my e-book so more on that soon.

I'm excited to tell you that there are new stencils coming out that I designed for!  Can't wait and I will share as soon as they are in stock!!!  For now, here is a little artwork from this weekend.  It took me a couple of hours to draw this stem (I know, I know, slowww) but I colored it up in Illustrator today and I'm pretty happy with it.

Then onto some watercolor work.  I think there is potential, just need a lot more practice!!!

We are in for more 90's and humidity today and I will be happy when that breaks for sure.  I hope everyone is managing to stay cool!  Have a great rest of your weekend!

Studio Sunday and Rotational Design

Wow!  I can't believe I haven't posted here for a month!  It has been a little hectic and then I was away for the 4th of July.  Still, no excuse!  I am busy writing what I think will turn out to be my first E-Book on Rotational Design with Stencils!  I get more excited about this every day as I experiment with design ideas to show and teach.

This piece that I created yesterday utilizes one of my center shape stencil designs from Medallion Master Template No. 6 and includes free-form rotational design stenciling.  The designs created this way can be used as is or they can be the foundation for much more hand-drawn development.

I have so much to show you that I know will excite you and get you inspired to sink your teeth into this process.  The techniques I show you can be used in conjunction with my Medallion Master Templates, or not.  I will provide you with a list of all the tools you need to get started.  The best part is the more stencils you have to work with, the more opportunities you have to create unlimited designs.

We are going to explore line and shape and push it to the max!  Not all designs need to be circular in nature.  I will provide you with a template you can create yourself as well as easy instructions on how to create designs in other shapes.

There's going to be a whole lot of layering going on, too!  No matter whether you like watercolor, acrylic, colored pencils or other coloring tools, you can use them all with this technique.

And designs can tell stories rather than being beautiful semi-geometric in nature.  I will give you plenty of design ideas and once you get started, you won't be able to stop!

Here are a few more shots of the artwork I created for Zendoodle Workshop Magazine.

I can't wait to share all this with you so I'm working hard to get it completed but I expect it could take another month.  I will keep you updated of the status.  Thanks as always for reading and I hope you have a magical and creative weekend.

Studio Sunday - Week 5 of Creating Collections for Home Decor and HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful Father's Day here in the northeast!!!  Tons of sunshine and a lot of reminiscing!  Happy Father's Day to all the Dads I know out there because I know it's one of the biggest, most important jobs you will ever have in your life xoxo

Finally, I'm finished and at the risk of the possibility that someone infringes on my copyrights, I'm sharing the entire body of work with you here.  This was one of the best workshops I have ever taken!  It made me disciplined and happy about creating a huge body of work that I can honestly say I am proud of.  Enjoy it but please remember, I created this artwork and I am publishing it on this blog for viewing purposes only.  None of the artwork or images posted here can be used by anyone other than myself for any reason.  None of this artwork can be used without express written permission by me, Margaret Applin, and requires a signed license agreement be in place.

Thank you - Margaret

I should have lots going on next weekend so stay tuned!  Have a fantastic Father's Day and a super creative week!!!

Studio Sunday and Week 4 of Creating Collections for Home Decor (Lilla Rogers)

Tea Towel C2016 MargaretApplin Designs

Wow!  Everything here is covered in pollen!  Today the sun is finally shining again and it feels warm and summer like outside.  I'm going to have to tear myself away from the studio and take care of things outside for a change.  I just completed week 4 of the Lilla Rogers and Margo Tantau workshop, Creating Collections for Home Decor, and I have been working every moment of every weekend creating art for products.

This week we had to create hand lettering, which was a challenge for me, but I think I pulled through ok.  Here are a couple of trinket dishes where I exhibited my fonts.  Of course, I can't just write out a word, I have to create an entire alphabet so I can use it again and again!!!

I love playing digitally with these fonts and here is an example of a set that I created using the Stabillo Aquarelle pencil and water and the different looks you can get with it in Photoshop and Illustrator.  I love the last version where I can layer color like in the trinket plates above.  I've got to go back and do the same thing in lower case so I have a complete set :)

I hope you all are have beautiful weather and a super creative weekend!!!
