Studio Sunday - Permission to Play!

Today, I'm thinking about small long-term goals.  This is odd for me as I most often fly by the seat of my pants!  I act, express myself, and go down that road that doesn't necessarily have an end in sight nor a pot of gold.  I have been lucky enough to achieve some meaningful success this way and I'm hugely grateful for that.  But, there are plenty of days where I just sit and think about what should I do next. Where do I want this journey to take me?

Those days, I get caught up in everyone else's journey and soaking up inspiration on Etsy and Pinterest and get lost in thoughts of, "what if I did something like that?" and "I wonder if I could create something that might do this?"  I know that there is constant back-end processing happening in my brain and that sooner or later, something will pop into my head and I will fly with it.  In the meantime, I have to play.

I know I have talked about this in the past, but I want to reiterate how important it is to not just dream but to play; with materials and your hands and explore techniques and just let the process happen.  All those great ideas that are simmering in the pot that is your imagination need to get out.  That's when the magic finally happens.  That's when the results of your play create the goal that then drives you down that path.

I know, I know it sounds silly, but I bet you there are a million creative people right now with new ideas simmering who haven't given themselves permission to play who's ideas will remain thoughts and dreams because they haven't pushed themselves to further explore their ideas on fabric or on paper or whatever type of media they have been dreaming about working with.  Just play.  The process will evolve and the ideas will bloom and all you have to do is play.

Today is a day of play for me.  Letting those ideas move from my brain down to the tips of my fingers and just let the process happen.  You need to let that collaboration happen between brain and hands.  You need to feel the materials, see the colors, and test the waters for those ideas to come to fruition.  Just play.

Of course, you can't expect miracles the first time around but you can be sure the seeds are being sown and when they start growing, there is no stopping them.  Just play and your ideas will bloom.

Don't give up tomorrow because nothing happened today or what you created is not what you were shooting for.  It's not a one-time thing.  It should be an everyday thing and that's something I'm working towards.  Go easy on yourself and give yourself permission to play.

Studio Sunday - Medallion Ornaments and Free Giveaway!

Finally!  Studio Sunday with a video! LOL  It's long overdue but I hope you will be inspired. These past couple of weeks I've been focusing on creating ornamental designs using the Medallion Master Template stencils.  I've created a couple of handfuls of designs but the options are limitless when it comes to configuring all kinds of ornament designs using these stencils.  These stencils can be purchased at

In my video, I cover my basic techniques for building ornament designs.  As you can see from these examples, the designs have more of a vintage feel and almost a tree topper look with more of a Victorian style.  My designs followed more of an elongated vertical line with shorter horizontal lines
and there is still lots of room for building detail and doodling or tangling!
Check out the video here!
In last week's post, I provided more detail on the FREE GIVEAWAY associated with this video.  Below I have provided examples of basic repeat patterns created using ornaments that I made using  the Medallion Master Template stencils.  I created 6 design elements all painted in the same colors so that they would easily coordinate.  Obviously my holiday theme is a little pastel but your color choices are limitless as well!

To be entered into the FREE GIVEAWAY, simply leave a comment on this posting.
I will select the winner on Wednesday, October 21st
who I will work with personally to create their very own repeat design that can be uploaded to Spoonflower to order your own holiday wrapping paper!  You will own the design and can use it however you desire.  You are not required to use the Medallion Master Templates to create your artwork, however, you should stay within a holiday theme.  There are no restrictions on color choices.
All design work needs to be completed prior to November 20th.
Have a fantastic day and keep on creating!

Studio Sunday Rescheduled Holiday Ornaments Video and Free Giveaway!

I've been working away on the holiday ornament designs but didn't have enough time to shoot the video yesterday underestimating the preparation time so I will be working to get that done and posted very soon.  Of course, the FREE GIVEAWAY is connected to the Holiday Ornaments theme so I don't have the finished example to show you today.  I know.....big letdown!!!

Let me explain how the FREE GIVEAWAY will work.  After I provide my video on How to Create Holiday Ornament Designs using the Medallion Master Templates, I will select one winner who I will personally work with to create one digital repeating pattern design from their own personal artwork (using artwork created with or without the Medallion Master Templates) that they will own.  This file can be uploaded to Spoonflower to order your very own wrapping paper, fabric or other.  (The images provided are examples of some holiday repeat designs that I had created previously.)

The only restriction is that the designs should be in a holiday theme.  There will be no restriction on color combinations.  You could create some medallion ornaments and other hand drawn or painted elements that you could combine with the other designs.  The winner will need to send me really good quality jpg images that I can work with to create a pleasing layout and will work directly with me to approve the layout and make any changes.

Examples will be provided when the video is posted this week and more details.

Have a fantastic weekend and keep on creating!
